Main timber types and their properties

Timber flooring is one of the defining elements of anyone's home. Whether it is stylised or minimalistic, a house's floor looks and quality gives the residence its true spirit while setting the tone of how a person feels inside the house.

Now, besides the different kinds of flooring styles that one can choose from, it is also very important to have some knowledge about the different kinds of timber available in order to make an informed (and more efficient) decision.

Here we have a short overview of the kinds of timber the homeowners are more likely to find when choosing among different flooring options:

  • Jarrah: One of the strongest and most characteristic red hardwoods out there. It can grow up to 40 meters high, 2 meters wide and sports excellent durability and resistance to termites, as well as being a favourite furniture material due to its poor burning qualities.
  • Blackbutt: Another heavy, strong hardwood. Has a certain level of greasiness, which makes it really easy to work with. It is also durable and very resistant to termites. This makes it an excellent choice for construction, especially for flooring purposes.
  • Tallowood: Brown in tone, this heavy hardwood is also greasy and extremely termite resistant, which makes it perfect for heavy construction and a favourite for flooring.
  • Ironbark: This extremely resistant hardwood owes its name to its rough and sturdy bark, which, coupled with its great resistance to weather, results in an astoundingly tough construction material. And indeed ironbark is one of the most sought-after woods when it comes to building engineered structures. It is also extremely resistant to weather, as well as for showing minimal signs of wear in the long term.
  • Pine: Pine is one of the wood types that comes in the greatest variety out there. The average pinewood is light and soft, but at the same time stiff and resistant to shock. Great for construction and flooring.
  • Brush box: Brush box heartwood’s main feature is its great strength and texture, which allows for outstanding finishes when working with it. It also wears slowly, proving excellent for construction purposes.

As you might have guessed by now, different kinds of timber sport different properties, which can be highly beneficial according to the owner’s circumstances and to the environment. Thankfully, with a little bit of knowledge coupled with some professional advice, homeowners will find the kind of timber that is just right for their homes.
