The Advantages of Recycled Hardwood Flooring

Nowadays, people are becoming more and more concerned about the environment in general, and rightfully so, since we seem to be harming it in every way possible. For example, in the present, entire woods all around the world get cut down every day. Thankfully, same as there are a great variety of alternatives for almost every process or action we undertake, there is also a way to have the best wooden floors possible while at the same time helping the environment. This environmentally conscious way to have top quality floors is known as reclaimed hardwood flooring.

Benefits and unfounded misconceptions

Much like recycling aluminum cans or used books and magazines, reclaimed hardwood flooring makes use of salvaged flooring that has been obtained from old factories, warehouses and even abandoned buildings. Once locales like these have been abandoned, most of the time they need to be torn down and the terrain cleaned in order to use it as a building ground for new construction. In these situations, reclaimed hardwood flooring allows the flooring materials that in most cases would have been burnt or thrown away, to be put to use again, thus avoiding needless use of living trees.

This environmentally friendly flooring option is becoming more popular every day, especially considering the great amount of wood used in buildings and constructions of old. On top of that, it is also worth mentioning that not only these constructions are abundant in timber, but that the kind of timber they employed is of a size and strength (in some cases they were used to support buildings and even factories) that would be hard to come by today.

And for those who think that these constructions of old were built in a time where the wood market didn’t offer much variety, they will be surprised to see the amount of different kinds of timber available as reclaimed hardwood flooring. Among these, we can find pine, chestnut, hickory and many other hardwoods.

How reclaimed hardwood flooring comes to be

The way all this flooring material gets "recycled' is by turning it over to wood re-manufacturers before being burned or thrown away. Once the re-manufacturer receives the material, they scan it thoroughly for any remains of metal or other materials that could be embedded in its structure. After that, the biggest and hardest beams of wood are re-sawn into planks that are then put to dry of any excess moisture. Once the process is finished, the reclaimed hardwood flooring is ready to be installed again, and with a scent and look that exudes personality, something rarely seen on today’s flooring options.

Lastly, for those concerned about the quality of the finished product, it is recommended that you should at least take a look at the reclaimed hardwood flooring options out there. Especially, to experience the stark quality of its finish first-hand and maybe also to give the environment a break.
